The benefits of living on an island in Croatia
Specific island atmosphere, pleasant climate, lighter pace and relaxed people. All of this is part of the charm that each of our islands possesses.
When we mention the island, the first picture is the same for most citizens, the view of the sea, rest for tired thoughts, the smell of pine trees and birds chirping, in short, complete carefreeness, but few have an idea of what life really is like on the island, when all summer visitors return home, when concerts, festivals, seasonal jobs, events and facilities for young people go with the season.
One of the advantages of living on an island over that in the city is time spent in nature. Every time I feel that stress has taken over too much, I walk by the sea. Sometimes the walks last for several hours - says one of the inhabitants of the island. The specificity of island life, the age and gender structure of the population and the self-reliance of often small populations, determined the roles of individual groups and forced the inhabitants of Croatian islands to live an active life into old age.
Life on the island is being made easier by investing in improving infrastructure, working and living conditions of children in preschool education, introducing a younger nursery group from the age of one and a 10-hour program, improving cultural and social life (equipping a cinema), arranging a football field, libraries, children's playgrounds, social rooms, but also through a rich cultural life (theater, music, folklore, klapa, various events).
When we talk about the advantages of life on the island, we should emphasize the peace and connection between all the inhabitants of the island, and in recent years there is better transport connection with the mainland.
In recent months, numerous opportunities have opened up for the development and financing of projects focusing on sustainable models, innovation, digitalisation and the green economy. Life on the island is challenging and it is harder to find things that are easily accessible to people in urban areas, but compared to other EU countries, Croatia has a surprising advantage. Namely, we are one of the few countries that has the Law on Islands and is preparing a strategy for the development of islands based on the Declaration on Smart Islands.
At a time when health and safety are paramount to all of humanity, the islands offer inexhaustible sources of clean air, sun, sea, nature, silence and freedom. Precisely because of all this, the islands are no longer just perfect locations for a vacation getaway, but are also becoming a real alternative to life in the city with almost all its benefits, but much less stress.
